Questions and answers:

What are the 3 types of pencil?
The different types of pencils and their uses in drawing all depends on the artist.

Graphite Pencil. Graphite Sticks Pencils are made up of solid sticks of graphite.
Charcoal pencil. Charcoal Pencil cores are made of compressed charcoal.
Coloured Pencil.

Which type of pencil is best for sketching?
For fine detail, you want H pencils; for texture and tonal range, you want B pencils. The ‘blacker’ the pencil, the softer the lead – a 9B pencil will leave a darker mark but become blunt very quickly. The standard sketching pencil is HB or 2B.

Which drawing pencil is the lightest?
You do not need the whole range of graphite pencils, from 9H to 9B! When I work with graphite, I usually have an HB, 2B, and a 4B. On the occasion that my drawing requires a very dark value, I may also use a 6B. If you are just beginning drawing, you may want to add a 2H for the lightest values in your drawing.

What pencil is best for shading?
While the softer B pencils are generally considered the best for shading, there’s no reason to discount the harder H pencils. The HB and H are good choices for fine, light, even shading. However, they too have drawbacks. Pencil grades from HB through H, 2H to 5H get progressively harder and are easier to keep sharp.

What does F mean on a drawing pencil?
Most pencil manufacturers outside of the U.S. use this scale, using the letter “H” to indicate a hard pencil. Likewise, a pencil maker might use the letter “B” to designate the blackness of the pencil’s mark, indicating a softer lead. The letter “F” is also used to indicate that the pencil sharpens to a fine point.

What is the darkest pencil number?
Pencil makers manufacture No. 1, 2, 2.5, 3, and 4 pencils—and sometimes other intermediate numbers. The higher the number, the harder the core and lighter the markings. (No. 1 pencils produce darker markings, which are sometimes preferred by people working in publishing.)
